Artist Statement

There exists a nearly universal and powerful attraction for certain forms that evolve in nature.  Whether found in bones, shells, or stones,  these natural forms draw us into a primordial relationship which awakens our senses: beckoning us to become more fully present, to transcend the strictly visual, and engage in a kind of emotionally sensuous interaction with the form.  In contemplation, we may become the line, the curve, or sharp edge and feel the harmony or tension of mass and balance.
As a sculptor, I am privileged to dwell on this experience that may be only momentarily enjoyed by others, such as when finding a special shell during a walk on a favorite beach.  The process of my work begins with the same joy of discovery.  I am always amazed at what great motion of nature: genetic, volcanic, wind or wave has brought some found object to rest in the palm of my hand.  I have collected beach "treasures" over many years.  The study of my collected forms has become an integral part of the development of my sculpture. The challenge has been to convey some of the inherent energy or vitality from my interactive observations of the natural object to the final sculptural form. Each sculpture receives many layering on of my hands to form and finish.  For a time, my hands become an imagined extension of the elements that work in nature. I work on each piece as a partner to fire, wind and wave.  Some of the forms resemble the object from which they were fashioned, some take on aspects of the human form, while others suggest landscapes or unique creature species.
I hope that these sculptures will be passed on from generation to generation and bring visual and tactile pleasure to those that care for them.
